The Book
A Christmas
Carol – A Timeless Christmas Classic. On a cold Christmas Eve in Victorian London, Ebenezer Scrooge has no interest in celebrating. A wealthy but lonely businessman, he values money above friendship and considers Christmas a waste of time. His clerk, Bob Cratchit, and his cheerful nephew, Fred, have very different ideas about what makes life worthwhile.
That night, an unexpected visitor interrupts Scrooge’s familiar routine and announces a series of strange encounters. What follows challenges the way he sees himself, other people and the choices he has made.
First published in 1843, A Christmas Carol combines a ghost story with humour, mystery and moving scenes of family life. Through its memorable characters, Dickens explores poverty, generosity and our responsibility towards others. The story raises questions that still matter today: What does it mean to live well? How much do our choices affect those around us? And is it ever too late to change?
The Author
Charles Dickens – The Voice of Victorian England. Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was an English novelist and journalist who became one of the most celebrated writers of the Victorian era. Born in Portsmouth, he faced hardship early in life. At twelve, he had to leave school and work in a shoe-polish factory when his father was imprisoned for debt. The experience deeply influenced his writing.
After working as a journalist, Dickens rose to fame with The Pickwick Papers. He went on to write novels such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and Great Expectations. Many were published in instalments, with readers eagerly waiting for each new chapter.
His stories combine humour, vivid characters and a strong concern for social injustice, especially the suffering of children and the poor. Beyond writing, Dickens edited magazines, supported charitable causes and gave popular public readings. He died aged fifty-eight, leaving a literary legacy that continues to reach readers around the world.
